Journey with the Monks of Norcia

As the pilgrims leave the winding streets of Assisi behind, they continue their journey through the beautiful Umbrian countryside toward the mountain town of Norcia. Their destination is a place deeply connected to the roots of Western monasticism and to the life of one of the Church’s most influential saints: St. Benedict.

The day brings them into the quiet world of the Benedictine monks, where prayer and work shape the rhythm of daily life. But it also gives the pilgrims an opportunity to experience another side of Norcia—its culture, its food, its traditions, and the simple joy of sharing time together.

It is a day that moves between prayer and fellowship, reflection and celebration.

The pilgrims begin their morning at the monastery of the Benedictine monks in Norcia, joining the community for Mass.

There is something deeply moving about entering into the monks’ rhythm of prayer. After leaving the activity in Assisi, the pilgrims find themselves surrounded by the stillness of the monastery. The atmosphere invites them to slow down and remember the heart of their pilgrimage: seeking Christ.

The Mass offers a beautiful reminder that pilgrimage is not simply about traveling to holy places. It is about allowing those places to draw the heart closer to God.

For the pilgrims, praying alongside the monks is an opportunity to experience a community whose lives are centered on that very pursuit.

Following Mass, the pilgrims have the privilege of spending time with Father Cassian, the founding prior of the monastery and an important figure in the renewal of Benedictine monastic life in Norcia.

Father Cassian shares his reflections on the monastery, its history, and the importance of returning to the foundations of the Benedictine way of life. His words offer the pilgrims an opportunity to think about what renewal means—not only for a monastery, but for every person.

Renewal often begins with a return to what is essential: prayer, community, discipline, work, beauty, and the search for God.

His story gives the pilgrims much to consider. Each person can ask what might need to be renewed in his or her own life. What has been neglected? What has been forgotten? What would it look like to return to the things that truly matter?

These questions are part of the gift of pilgrimage. The journey takes people to new places, but it also invites them to look more deeply at their own lives.

After their time at the monastery, the pilgrims make their way into the city of Norcia.

The change of atmosphere is noticeable. The quiet and prayerful setting of the monastery gives way to the lively streets of the town, where the pilgrims experience the local culture and traditions.

Norcia is well known for its food, and the pilgrims have the chance to sample some of the flavors for which the region is famous. The experience adds another dimension to the day, reminding them that pilgrimage is not only about moments of solemnity. There is also a place for joy, friendship, laughter, and celebration.

One of the memorable highlights is the opportunity to try the beer produced by the monks themselves.

The experience offers a wonderful connection to the Benedictine tradition of balancing prayer and work. The monks’ craftsmanship and hospitality demonstrate how ordinary work can become part of a life ordered toward God.

For the pilgrims, sharing food and drink together also creates space for fellowship. Conversations flow, laughter fills the table, and the group enjoys a welcome moment of rest after a meaningful morning.

The journey from Assisi to Norcia becomes much more than a change of scenery.

The pilgrims begin the day in prayer with the Benedictine monks. They listen to Father Cassian and reflect on the call to renewal. They explore the streets of Norcia, experience its traditions, taste its food, and share in the simple joy of being together.

In many ways, the day captures the heart of the pilgrimage itself.

The pilgrims discover that the journey to the Face of Christ can happen in many different ways—in the silence of a monastery, through the wisdom of a priest, in the beauty of the Umbrian countryside, in the traditions of a historic town, and around a table shared with friends.

As the group eventually prepares to leave Norcia, they carry with them more than memories of another beautiful Italian town. They carry the prayers of the morning, the reflections they have heard, the stories they have shared, and the joy of experiencing the day together.

The journey continues, but the lessons of Norcia remain with them: a reminder that renewal begins with returning to what matters most, and that the search for Christ can lead pilgrims into both the sacred silence of a monastery and the joyful fellowship of a shared table.
