There are places where time feels thin. Assisi is one of them.
You feel it as the road curls upward through olive groves and stone walls, as the pink-hued buildings rise from Mount Subasio like a prayer carved into the hillside. Bells echo. Swallows circle. The modern world, so loud a moment ago, suddenly knows how to whisper.
I had come to Assisi many times in my imagination, through the writings of St. Francis and the stories of his radical joy and holy poverty. But nothing prepares you for the moment you step into the Basilica of St. Francis and descend into the stillness beneath it—toward the place where his bones have rested for eight centuries.
The descent is gradual, almost deliberate, as if the Basilica itself is teaching you how to slow down. Stone replaces fresco. Light softens. Voices fall away.
Then you are there.
Before you is the tomb of St. Francis—no grandeur, no spectacle. Just stone, silence, and presence. The bones of a man who renounced everything to follow Christ, who rebuilt the Church not with power but with love.
Francis does not belong to the past. His witness still breathes, still unsettles, still invites.

Stepping back into the sunlight, Assisi itself feels like an extension of that tomb—humble, beautiful, quietly radiant. Narrow medieval streets wind past stone houses adorned with flowers. Laundry flutters like prayer flags. Every corner seems to hold a memory: of Francis, of Clare, of Carlo, of countless souls who came searching for God and stayed to listen.
Assisi doesn’t overwhelm you. It welcomes you. It teaches you how to see joy in simplicity and holiness in the ordinary.
In March 2026, Inside the Vatican Pilgrimages will journey to Assisi—and you are invited to come.
Together, we will pray at the tomb of St. Francis and be among the first in eight hundred years to venerate his bones. Come with us to walk the streets that shaped his vocation, and encounter the living Franciscan tradition through sacred liturgy, guided reflection, and moments of quiet grace. You will have time to listen to God, to the saints, and to the stirring of your own heart.
If you are longing for renewal…
If you are seeking simplicity in a complicated world…
If you feel drawn to the joy and courage of St. Francis…
Assisi is waiting.
Come walk where holiness still hums beneath the stones. Come kneel where silence speaks. Come with Inside the Vatican Pilgrimages this March 2026—and let St. Francis lead you closer to Christ.
